ITER Neutronics Services

This effort involves both the development of neutronics services for the ITER project as well as the analysis of various ITER components and facilities for their neutronics performance.

As the ITER project transitions from a design effort to a licensing and construction effort, the need for ongoing neutronics calculations will itself transition. In support of licensing the ITER machine as a nuclear device, a quality assurance process is being developed. Related to this process, and in support of ITER becoming a real facility, efforts are underway to integrate CAD-based geometries into the MCNP, one of the standard neutronics tools for ITER analysis. This includes working closely with the ITER drawing office to ensure that the project's design drawings are well-suited to this kind of analysis.

Additionally, neutronics calculations are needed for a variety of work packages, including various diagnostics and plasma heating components. As these scientists and engineers require confirmation that their devices have adequate neutronics and radiation protection performance, this group will be supporting those efforts.
